Long-term memory

It is a "warehouse" of our memory. Active memory can extract different information from long-term memory to fill its "slots" We can use practice and repetition to store desired data in long-term memory. To effectively do so, don't try to study a particular subject all at once; instead, try to spread out study sessions throughout several days and periods. Then, use active recall for the next several days to remember the material.

Procrastination

While preparing to do something we don't want to, brain areas that are associated with pain are activated.

To deal with this, start the activity, remove distractions, and set a 25-minute timer. Promise yourself a little reward for sticking to the time. The feeling of unwillingness to do the activity will subside.

Neuromodulators

Three neuromodulators affect or signal a particular type of behavior.

  • Acetylcholine affects focused learning and attention.
  • Dopamine signals in relation to unexpected rewards
  • Serotonin affects social life and risk-taking behavior.

Working Memory

It is estimated to have 4 active "slots," and it is active when we focus on solving a specific task. You would benefit from chunking when working memory is active, as each chunk will only take one "slot" of memory instead of potentially the same amount of information taking up all of the slots if it's not in a chunk.

Chunking

Consolidate data of similar types into chunks, this memory technique allows you to effectively remember the general idea and its relation to other data. Creating a big knowledge picture altogether.

Tools to help you create chunks:Recall - try to remember and bring up in your mind material you have just learned without looking at the original source of help

We are distracted and not focusing on the problem; instead, we are doing some less intensive activity and exercising for example.

Diffused mode

Our working memory is engaged, and we are intensely focused on solving a problem

Focused mode

VS

It is essential to utilize both of the modes available to us to solve difficult problems. By shifting our focus to something else from active mode, we enable our unconscious mind to form connections between information that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. It can lead to an "AHA!" moment when you revisit a task and discover a solution you hadn't considered.
