So What?
KATSEYE was formed on June 28, 2024 through Netflix’s competition show The Debut: Dream Academy. As a global girl group, rather than just a K-Pop group, they represent a blend of cultures and musical styles, which attracts a worldwide audience.
The Members
The KATSEYE global girl group consists of six members between the ages of 17 and 23. They come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, providing their fans with people to relate to.
My Discovery of KATSEYE
I was introduced to KATSEYE by first listening to one of their hit songs Gabriella, released in 2025. What first caught my attention was not just that this song had a dance to it, but that every one of their songs have respective dances to them. I quickly went down a deep dive and learned that their songs and dances are popular worldwide, especially on the TikTok platform. Their song Gabriella was particularly interesting to me because it includes dances, lyrics, and beats that combine many different cultures and provide a shared experience to listeners.

Introduction to KATSEYE and thier hit song "Gabriella"
Dance Influences: Latin and Indian Dance Styles
The choreography of Gabriella is a blend of traditional Latin ballroom and Indian classical dance influences, which has produced a unique performance that is both modern as well as a representation of the cultures of some of the members. Daniella has been trained in traditional Latin ballroom dances her whole life and added her touch to the choreography by getting a solo dance during the bridge of the song. Lara, who is ethnically Sri Lankan Tamil, stood front and center during the couple of pre-choruses while the entire group did an Indian classical-influenced dance. Because the dances in this song are culturally diverse and modern, fans all across the globe can connect through it as well as learn the dance themselves. While the dance is detailed and fast, it is still accessible and relatively simple to learn.
Dances are made to convey stories and emotions without words. Interestingly, creating coherent and visually appealing choreography in person vs on film is very different and each have their own challenges. Because the Gabriella dance needs to be visually captivating both in person as well as on film, the choreographers, Grant Gilmore and Sohey Sigihara, had to keep both views in mind.

Bilingual Lyrics
Bilingual lyrics in popular music not only enhance the song, but they also have the capability to connect with more audiences. Different languages in songs encourage shared cultures and connection with people from all over the world. KATSEYE member Daniella adds to the song Gabriella by singing in Spanish during the bridge as well as incorporating her traditional Latin ballroom dances.
Music in multiple languages is a useful tool to help both adults and children connect to different cultures. Catchy tunes and chords, like the ones in Gabriella, can help with language development for any audience.

I like artists and music that I can relate to. For example, I am a 19 year old who loves music, and has also just joined an acapella group called Infinite Harmony. Ever since discovering KATSEYE and their music, I have been thinking about the possibility of arranging one of their songs to present to my group to possibly perform.
