Nightingale Training School
Florence Nightingale, nicknamed “The Lady with the Lamp” after her work with wounded soldiers in Crimea, now sees her project come to fruition: professionalizing nursing and giving women a central place in hospital organization. “We do not just treat wounds, we look after the overall health of patients. Hygiene is the key,” said Miss Nightingale at the inauguration. The opening of this school marked a historic milestone: for the first time, nursing training became structured and recognized. Several graduating classes were already expected in the years to come.
