World War I involved rising militarism, aggressive nationalism, intricate systems of opposing alliances, and intense imperial rivalries among European powers, particularly in the Balkans.

Today is the first Christmas I've spent in this war. It's a day I miss my family a lot. I miss Christmas dinners and spending time with my sisters and brothers. But today was a different day. This time, everyone took a stand, putting up Christmas trees and even singing carols. I was able to meet some of our "enemies" and have a smoke with them. It was only a few hours, but we spontaneously decided to put the war aside to get to know the human beings beneath the enemy uniform.

Today is my first day on the battlefield. I enlisted to go to World War I. The trenches were the first thing we encountered. These are where all our soldiers take cover. This is where the enemy trench fires, and where all you see is the flashes and sounds of gunfire and bombs. I'm scared. In such a short time, many of my friends and comrades have died or been wounded on the battlefield. I hope this ends soon.

Today the bombing in the trenches started again, and today one of my best friends from this trench left. He felt ill. He started having headaches yesterday and couldn't even get up for a smoke, so they took him away today, and it looks like he won't be able to be here for a long time. After this, our superiors informed us that this disease is called "Trench Fever," so they're going to clean up our facilities. I hope this disease doesn't take my comrades. With this war, we can't have another problem.

The days in the trenches have become harder. For the first time, I was sent to the front line of the trench. This is one of the worst places I've ever been; there are rats everywhere, dead bodies lying around, and I lived the whole time in fear that a fight with the enemy fort would start. I couldn't sleep all night; I had to watch and stand guard to make sure there weren't any surprise attacks from our enemies. I'm scared. I'm starting to have dreams about the war, gunshots, bombs, and the memory of my comrades. I long to go home.

Today, on the front line of the trenches, I was shot in combat. They had to take me to the hospital because these injuries are serious, and apparently they're going to let me go home to my family to rest for a couple of weeks. I miss my mother and brothers a lot, but nothing will ever be the same again, after so many days in those trenches, seeing and hearing so many things that no one is prepared for. I hope I never go back there, and I hope I've never been there. I hope that one day I'll recover and be the same as before.
