Talking about the past
17 September 2025
Kerry James kjames@cavc.ac.uk
The simple past
Sherry ate pasta and apple pie for dinner last night.
The simple past is used to talk about actions that are FINISHED
When do we use the simple past?
We use the simple past to talk about: ✅ Actions that happened at a specific time in the past ✅ Completed events or situations ✅ Stories and past experiences
When do we use the simple past
Examples:
  • I visited Paris last year.
  • She watched a movie yesterday.
Signal words:
Look for time expressions that show the past:
  • yesterday
  • last week/month/year
  • in 2010
  • two days ago
  • when I was a child
Two types of verbs:
Irregular
Regular
go → wenthave → had eat → ate see → saw 👉 You need to memorize irregular verbs.
Verb + -ed work → worked play → played listen → listened
Two types of verbs:
Negative: I didn’t play football yesterday. She didn’t go to the park. Questions: Did you play football? Did she go to the park?

Everyone must contribute!

1. Make a list of things you see in the picture. 2. Decide on some adjectives to describe the things. 3. In your group, decide what happened. Write a story together using the simple past. Be creative. You will read the story to the class.
