Cooking a meal from Scratch
This experience was educaitonal and interactive and icnredibly fun. A group of friends and I learned how to make a two course meal from scratch- making our own pesto, meat rub, pasta, patatoes and more. Not only did we learn how to cook we also learned how to work collaboratively and communicate in a way to make the best meal possible. LO's completed: 1, 2, 5 & 7
Teaching how to bake cookies
Teaching my friend how to bake cookies from scrach was much harder than expected. I had to give clear and concise insrtuctions to ensure the cookies came out correctly, which persoally highlighted the importance of word choice and keeping my patience so as to better the outcome- which is this case was cookies. LO's completed: 1 & 5
Senior Instagram Account
Along with one of my classmates, we decided to create, curate, and maintain a senior instagram for this years seniors. On it we have made fun posts and reels abotu our students, notify important dates of sumbissions and events at school, and much more. The aim of this account is to document OUR senior year, full of smiles and laughs. I have defintiely ahd to learn editing skills, clear langueage for imporant messages, and how to work in the best way possible with my partner and respect the wishes of the students in my grade. LO's competed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7
Helping Label Books at Elementary School
Not only did I physically go and help label the books, I also created a schedule for a week so each day 3+ students could go to the library at the elemntary school and help out labeling and organizing the books. Although this was not a dificult task, it allowed teachers in the elementary school to be more focused on cleaing their classrooms and prepping for the summer while we took care of the 'busy work' LO's completed: 3 & 7
Photoshooting Padel Tournamnet
I had never taken sports pictures until this tournmanet. This is the schools annual padle tournament, and I decided to dedicate my time and was the photographer. It was incredibly hard to time the pictures so as to capture the right moment and to make it to every court and take pictures of every player. I definitely learned the importance of patience and timing. LO's completed: 1 & 2
Picking up Trash on Earth Day
For Earth Day, I went around the school picking up the trash that was in the outside garden, middle patio, classrooms, under desks, bathrooms, not simply because it was Earth Day but also to lighten the loaded of those who work in the school picking up the trash outside when it is not even part of their job description. I never thought that so few peolpe could produce so much trash and in only 30 minutes. I filled two boxes with trash within 1.5 hours. LO's completed: 5 & 6
Water Polo Tounrament
I had never played in a tournamnet in the US, played the US water polo system, or had to play with a team 20 minutes after meeting them. On this trip I did all three of those. Having to learn a new system of numbering and play was incredibly difficult and applying it within 30 minutes of leanring it was even more complex. Thankfully my new teammates were willing to help me and I ended up surprised with the quickness with which I adapted. LO's completed: 1 & 2
14km hike Manzanares el Real
First hike of the year, and it was one that was beautiful and challenging. At one point it was jst pure walking up natural staris of rocks, headed into the fog and being unable to see more than a couple of meters in front of you. At other is was beautiful, walking along the river, natural streams found aong the hike, and impressive views. Being in such a silence away from the city was almost a sound detox and refreshed me incredibly. It was complicated to walk for so long, but it was accomplished! LO's completed: 4
Learning how to surf
I have always wanted to learn how to surf, and finally this summer my cousin taught me in California. I was able to stand up on one wave, and was only able to go one day but I spent the entire day in the water learning how to paddle correclty, when to time the waves, balancing standing up, it was a full body and mind excersice. I definitely learned more about being patient and the physical strengths needed than surfing itself but it was an eye-opening experience. LO's compelted: 1 & 2
Boxes and Charity
For the boxes, we had to find boxes at home or at school from old deliveries, tape them up to be as sturdy as possible, and then find colored paper to cover the boxes. It was a tedious task, cutting and folding and gluing the paper correctly to make the boxes presentable.
The charity we chose was hard to do so because we had to ensure that used materials - notebooks with only a fiew pages used, pencil cases etc - would be accepted. Madrid for Refugees was the perfect fit!
Planning & Design
When my classmate and I decided to do this project, we had little time to plan because it was right around final exams and end of the school year. Although this caused some stress for us, we knew it was the best dates to do so becuase end of year, everyone is done using thier pencil cases, notebooks end up not being used etc. By having it available not ony at the High School but also at the Lower and Middle School for a week, we where able to gather so much more than expected. We did have to send emails out to all the principles at the school to ensure that the organization would work and boxes could be set up, but once we got the approval the hardest part was over! The desgin of the poster was also harder than expected because wee had to make it fun and attention calling without using too many colors since we could not print thousands of copies in a variety of colors. They had to be simple, convey all the right information of when, where, what and how, and I believe this poster does so.
Collection
Once we had all the materials, we had to come the week after school ended, go down to the lower and middle school and collect all the boxes and take them back up to the high school. We had to sort through some of the material to ensure it was in good enough condition to turn into the charity and organize into piles of bags, pencila cases, writing material, paper and notebooks etc.
Madrid for Refugees!
On June 25th, the donations were turned into representative Meredtih from Madrid for Refugees. Her entire car was filled and seeing the amount of donations and finally realizing the impact we were having on this charity and the kids in it was worht the stress of planning and organizing the donation drive during finals
