The scenario: Your colleague has food in their teeth during an important client meeting.
What is it?
A negative feedback style where you neither care personally nor challenge directly.
The Manipulative Insincerity reaction: You say nothing to them directly. After the meeting, you talk to other colleagues and mock the person. You might laugh at their expense.
The consequence
You don't care about the person so you do not give them important feedback but also talk unkindly.
The result: The colleague never learns about the issue from you. Instead, they find out later that you and others were talking about them, which is both embarrassing and hurtful. This also erodes their trust in you and the team.
Why is this a problem?
It creates a toxic and untrustworthy environment.
