Ageing, a global challenge
The proportion and absolute number of older people in populations around the world is increasing dramatically. This is one of the reasons why ageing is becoming a major political issue. People aged over 60:
- their proportion will exceed that of children under 5 for the first time in 2020
- their number is estimated at 2.1 billion in 2050, compared with 1 billion in 2019
Global life expectancy for older people continues to increase.
Ageing, a global challenge
Nearly a quarter of the overall burden of morbidity and mortality affects people aged 60 and over. This is largely due to long-term illnesses such as:
- cancer
- chronic respiratory diseases
- heart disease
- musculoskeletal disorders (such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis)
- as well as mental and neurological disorders.
