The Post

Screenplay by Liz Hannah

The Post was Hannah's first screenplay, and was met with immediate praise. Written late in 2016, and picked up shortly after by Sony, the film was fast-tracked. By late November 2016, Spielberg was on board, and the film was in development. Incredibly, The Post was released just 13 months later. It's said that Spielberg took a hurried approach to production of the film to mimic the fast-paced world of print journalism, but also likely in response to Trump being elected within that same timeframe. There were very real threats to freedom of the press being made by Trump and his administration at the time. Linked above is the film script.

Set Design by Rena DeAngelo SDSA

Set design on The Post was no different from the rest of the film, in that Spielberg and crew were intent on portraying the scenes as historically accurate. Set designer Rena DeAngelo recalls interviewing past employees of The Post to get a clear idea of what the offices looked like. Old photos provided aided DeAngelo create authentic office spaces and newsroom… down to the color of the paint, and the old typesetting machines they acquired. Meryl Streep commented, “They really knocked it out of the park by finding and bringing in all these old movable-type printing machines that no longer exist. It was thrilling to do the scene there with the real typesetters. It was like stepping back in time. It gave me the chills...”

John Williams Composer

Spielberg called on his longtime friend and contributor, John Williams to score The Post. William's signature style lent itself perfectly to the film. A clip from "The Presses Roll" can be heard here.

Combining an All-Star Cast with Industry Leaders

With The Post's minimal budget of only $50,0000, and speedy production timeline could have easily failed to produce a Box Office hit, but Spielberg's genius came through in his timing and use of some familiar friends.

The Post tells a story of the publishing of the Pentagon Papers which proved the U.S. Government had been lying to the people for years regarding the reality of the Vietnam War. The New York Times broke the story initially, but when the Times was met with a court injunction, editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Katharine Graham of The Post had to decide whether to proceed to pick up where The Times left off.
