Knights & Castles

Knights and Castles Knights were warriors who served kings and lords in return for land or protection. They followed a code of chivalry that emphasized loyalty, bravery, and honor. Castles, built of stone, were both homes and fortresses, designed to defend against attack and symbolize a lord’s power.

Life of Peasants Most people in the Middle Ages were peasants, living and working on the land owned by nobles. They grew crops, tended animals, and paid taxes or gave labor to their lords. Life was hard and centered around survival, but villages were also tight-knit communities.

Crusades The Crusades were a series of religious wars between the 11th and 13th centuries, launched by European Christians to capture the Holy Land from Muslim control. They opened new trade routes, spread ideas, and changed relationships between cultures.

Trade and Towns As farming improved, trade grew and towns began to develop around markets and crossroads. Merchants and craftsmen formed guilds to protect their trades. Towns brought new opportunities for work and wealth and helped Europe shift away from a purely rural life.

The Church’s Power During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church was the most powerful institution in Europe. It influenced laws, education, and politics, and owned vast amounts of land. The Church also provided spiritual guidance and united people under a shared faith.
