Before commencing, check the static water pressure and current flow rates. Water pressure is recorded in Bar and can be taken at a tap or usually at a washing machine valve with the pressure gauge attached and then turn on the washing machine valve to record the pressure. Check the flow rates at the appliances with a weir cup with the taps running and record this information. This is all done to make sure the property has acceptable pressure and flow rates that will meet the requirements of the property/installation.

When checking performance data on the hot water system caution needs to be taken beforehand, for example testing the system is water tight as you have carried out already on the cold water system. Once this is achieved, then the commissioning procedure can be followed in accordance with manufacturers instructions. What to consider

For example close some isolation points to appliances and turn on the water and check all pipe joints first. Then if satisfied that there are no leaks on the pipework that you have installed, turn on the isolation valves to the appliances one by one checking as you go to make sure there is nothing leaking. If there are some issues/leaks, rectify and continue with testing. When the system is full, check with a weir cup the flow rate at each outlet (tap) record the information in litres per minute. Check the waste pipe at this point too as the water is being discharged into the appliances (sinks, basins, baths).

Once the job has been completed (the installation) visually check all joints, valves and taps. If pressure testing makes sure that you record the correct pressures and time the test began, how long and at what pressure.
