Society As with other Amazonian peoples, social bounds in Shuar communities are determined by family ties. Traditional elliptical dwellings called "jea" were usually built with use of natural materials near a river. In many communities, they now serve as schools or museums, as well as meeting places. Shuar clothing is very elaborate: men wear an Itipñañ (blanket), Esantim (pendants) made from seeds collected from the forest, and a Nunkutai (necklace). In addition, depending on their social status, they wear a crown made from toucan feathers. The crown has great symbolic value, as it represents power, wisdom, loyalty and trust. The traditional Shuar dress for women is simple and monochromatic. Women also wear necklaces, bracelets and anklets with coloured beads and feathers.
