Fact or fiction?

How do you know?

Some ideas are really true, and some are maybe only true for you.

There are lots of ideas in your mind that you think are true: swimming is fun, ice cream is yummy, clowns are scary. But, just because you think something is true, doesn't make it true for everyone all the time. Some people think swimming is scary, broccoli is yummy, and clowns are fun.

Case study: Tornadoes

What are some facts about tornadoes, and what are some opinions?

A fact is an idea you can prove. It's true all the time for all people, everywhere. Facts tell us about what really happened, how things connect, and how the world really is. Opinions are ideas that can't really be proven. They might be different for different people, or they might change over time. When you give an opinion, it’s good to say what you think and support your opinion with facts. Click through the cards to learn facts about tornadoes, such as what they are, how they're measured, and where they are most likely to happen.  Learn how you can use these facts to make better opinions about tornadoes. The opinions are bolded and the facts are underlined.

We will always know how to prepare for a tornado, because special scales are used to measure tornado strength and how much damage they cause.

I think tornadoes cause too much damage, because tornadoes produce strong wings that can destroy buildings and homes.

Living in Texas, I think we should practice tornado drills in school every day, because tornadoes are most common in the central and southern parts of the United States.

Tornadoes are scary, because they are unstoppable forces of nature.

Fact vs. Opinion Clues

What words or phrases give you clues about whether an idea is fact or opinion?

If you're not sure whether an idea is a fact or an opinion, you can sometimes look to the sentence itself for clues! In some cases, the phrases below can be used for either type of idea, but most of the time the words will give you a strong hint about whether something is a fact or an opinion.
