Punctuation
Objective
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of punctuation in writing.
Period (.)Used at the end of a complete sentence that makes a statement.
Example: She walked to the store.
Comma (,)
Separates items in a list, joins independent clauses with conjunctions, and sets off introductory elements or extra information.
Example: We bought apples, oranges, and bananas.
Question Mark (?)
Used at the end of a direct question.
Example: What time does the movie start?
Exclamation Point (!)
Shows strong emotion or excitement. Example: Watch out!
Quotation Marks (“ ”) Used to show someone’s exact words or to highlight titles of short works. Example: He said, “I’m ready to go.” Colon (:) Introduces a list, explanation, or quote after a complete sentence. Example: Bring the following: pencils, paper, and a ruler. Semicolon (;) Connects two related independent clauses without using a conjunction. Example: I wanted to go; it was too late. Apostrophe (’) Shows possession or forms contractions. Example: That’s Maria’s book.
