introduction

The loss of control in the psychological thriller does not occur suddenly, it is announced and amplified through different altered perceptions of reality. Hallucinations are the most direct manifestation of this gap between the character's mind and reality. The thriller, a cinematographic and literary genre, is characterized by its ability to play with anxieties, suspense and intense emotions, while immersing the viewer in situations where uncertainty and psychological tension are omnipresent. Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining is a perfect example thanks to the way in which the thriller, through its narrative and visual processes, explores the limits of the human mind and the fear of losing control. The director plays with both processes to show us Jack Torrance's gradual descent into insanity.
