Spill & Emergency Response
Even with safe handling and storage, spills can happen. Knowing how to respond quickly and correctly prevents injuries, environmental harm, and property damage.
Stop & Assess
- Immediately recognize the spill and stop what you’re doing.
- Do not rush in — assess from a safe distance.
- Ask yourself:
- What chemical is it? (check label/SDS if safe to do so)
- How much was spilled?
- Is it safe to control or should I evacuate?
- Warn others in the area — shout “spill” or activate alarms if required.
- Move coworkers to a safe location if there’s risk of exposure.
- Evacuate if the spill is large, toxic, flammable, or unknown.
- Put on appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, respirator if required).
- Use spill kits: absorbent pads, neutralizers, or spill pillows.
- Contain the spill: block drains, dike with absorbent material.
- Report spill to a supervisor as soon as possible.
- Do not attempt to clean it up.
- Evacuate the area immediately.
- Shut doors if possible to contain vapors.
- Call emergency services and your supervisor.
- Provide SDS to responders when they arrive.
