It was no longer safe for Baba to hurry around the city handing out forged documents, nor for him or Ammo Kader to meet with others from the Resistance, as they risked leading the Germans straight to them. It was late now, but she felt no tiredness. Safiyyah was sitting outside the closed living room door; she had been sent to bed after dinner so the adults could speak in private. Of course, she hadn’t gone. Her joints ached from crouching in one spot, being careful not to move and let the floorboards creak. She overheard Baba say that the question was how on earth could they now get papers to those who needed them… Yemma offered to go instead of Baba, but they all agreed that it would still be very risky. Besides, Yemma didn’t know her way around much past their arrondissement, and got terribly nervous with all the soldiers around. Safiyyah had to stop herself from bursting into the room and presenting her idea to them. It seemed so blazingly obvious to her that she couldn’t understand how none of them had thought of it yet. She and Timothée could do it! No one would suspect children of collaborating with the Resistance, surely. Safiyyah knew her way around much of the city like the back of her hand, and Timothée was an expert at moving around unnoticed. They’d be the ideal team.

She fidgeted with the tassels on the hallway carpet agitatedly as she waited for the adults to finish and get up. When she heard movement, she ducked back into her bedroom, and once Ammo Kader and Ammo Imam had left, she caught Baba. Before he could even ask her why she wasn’t asleep, she launched into her proposal. She’d rehearsed it six times whilst crouching in the hallway, and felt confident that it was as persuasive as possible. Baba listened intently, shaking his head vigorously as soon as he realised what she was suggesting. She ignored him, and continued with her speech. She knew she’d struck a chord with him when she said there was no alternative; they couldn’t just let innocent Jews suffer when they had the power to help them. Baba looked away, clenching his jaw so tightly that his cheek rippled. When she finished, there was silence. “Safiyyah, I’ve heard what you have to say,” Baba said, “and I appreciate your concern and courage. Let me think about it. We’ll talk in the morning – you really must go to sleep now.” As she settled into bed and pulled her blanket over her, Safiyyah knew somewhere deep inside her that things were about to change. She’d sensed from Baba’s reaction that he knew he had no other choice but to allow her to help her now. Her whole body prickled as she was filled with nerves, anticipation, and a touch of excitement to finally, finally, be able to do something.
