"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him."(George Orwell, 1984)
1. Read the extract and find the words and/or expressions that create a peculiar atmosphere. 2. Observe and describe the picture. 3. Pairwork: discuss how you could connect the text to the picture.
The author of The Shadow of the Elements is a talented storyteller who has managed to captivate her readers with her ability to weave complex worlds and memorable characters.
