The study of crosslinguistic influences on the oral narratives of Wolof speakers of L2 English
Presented by yacine ngom
Supervisor: Pr. Pascale LECLERCQ
Learning sessions
introduction
Why oral narratives ?
Multilingual context
Aims
Research question
- Examine CLI in storytelling
- Compare Wolof & English referential strategies
- Highlight tensions between L1 & L2 norms
- How do Wolof speakers track characters in English?
- How does Wolof shape L2 narrative coherence?.
- Trilingual setting: Wolof – French – English
- Wolof: dominant vernacular, zero anaphora
- English: global, gendered pronouns & articles
- Reveal cognition, culture & language interaction
- Oral storytelling = rich site for CLI
Learning sessions
Review of Literature
Nominal Reference
Narratives & SLA
Crosslinguistic Influence (CLI)
- Wolof: noun classes, zero anaphora, repetition (Dialo, 1983; Sauvageot, 1965; Torrence, 2013)
- English: gendered pronouns, articles, referential chains (Halliday & Hasan, 1976; Chafe, 1994; Leclercq & Lenart, 2013)
- Reveal discourse competence (Berman & Slobin, 1994)
- Key site for CLI in reference, cohesion, evaluation (Labov, 1972; Gullberg, 2006)
- L1 impact on L2 (Odlin, 1989; James, 2012)
- Beyond “errors” → cognitive & cultural strategies (Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008)
METHODOLOGY
ANALYSIS
PARTICIPANTS
TASKS
- Focus on referential strategies
- Introduction, maintenance, reintroduction of characters
- Story retelling from wordless cartoon sequences
- Oral data → audio/video recorded & transcribed
- 20 Wolof speakers (English L2)
- 5 Wolof speakers (L1 baseline)
Unit presentation
results
Information Status – Cat
- Both groups mainly maintain the referent
- Slightly more introductions in UI group
- UI show more flexibility in reference tracking
Information Status – Simon
- Predominantly maintenance in both groups
- L2 Low: slightly more introductions
- L2 High: stronger cohesion through maintenance
Introduction
Referential Means – LI vs UI
- Both groups overuse definite NPs
- UI employ more zero anaphora
- UI show a slightly richer variety
Introduction
Referential Forms – LI vs UI
- LI: reliance on SNs & proper names
- UI: more possessives & varied forms
- UI show greater diversity overall
Learning sessions
intrepretation of results
LI learners → overuse of definite NPs, frequent repetition, pronoun confusion UI learners → more zero anaphora, increased use of pronouns & possessives Overall → progression in discourse competence, but CLI remains strong Wolof influence → preference for repetition, lack of gendered pronouns
Learning sessions
discussion
Comparison with Literature
- Confirms Odlin (1989), Jarvis & Pavlenko (2008) on CLI
- Echoes Gullberg (2006), Leclercq (2009): cohesion = SLA challenge
Limitations
- Small sample size (20 L2, 5 L1)
- One task type (picture-based narrative)
- Further research: more genres, longitudinal data
conclusion
future directions
implications
keys findings
- Wolof strongly influences English narratives (CLI)
- LI learners: overuse of definite NPs, limited cohesion
- UI learners: more varied strategies, but traces of Wolof remain
- More narrative tasks & genres
- Longitudinal studies for developmental trends
- Confirms literature on CLI in SLA
- Shows role of narrative traditions in shaping L2 discourse
Thanks

Introduction
Visual content is a cross-cutting and universal language, like music. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
We don't like to bore in our classes nor work with flat content. It's time to bet on dynamic and interactive learning experiences that stimulate the thinking and creativity of each student. Pose a question or problem that makes the class think; it is the essential ingredient to keep their attention. It is usually presented at the beginning of the topic to promote their critical thinking and participation.

Objectives
We are visual beings
We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
We better understand visual content. This type of content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms. Things enter through the eyes, the first image is what matters. We associate visual contentwith emotions.
Narrative beings
We teach through stories. They entertain us and help us maintain focus.
Our brain is prepared to consume visual content. And it makes sense: 90% of the information we process comes through our sight. That's why visual content helps facilitate faster learning in many cases.
Social beings
We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.
Digital beings
We avoid being part of the content saturation in the digital world.

Interactivity and animation can be your best allies when creating tables, infographics, or charts that help provide context to a topic or unit, as well as simplify information to make it more understandable. We are visual beings and find it easier to 'read' images than to read written text.
Demonstrating enthusiasm, flashing a smile, and maintaining eye contact with the rest of the people in the classroom can be your best allies when it comes to presenting content and creating motivating learning experiences. With that and some interactive content up to par, no class will resist you!

Show enthusiasm, smile, and maintain eye contact with your class: this will help you 'spread' your motivation for the content and approach new knowledge in a more positive way. They won't want to stop learning!
You can develop the content in more detail through your oral presentation. We recommend that you practice your voice and rehearse: the best improvisation is always the most prepared!
You can create an outline to summarize the content and use words that help consolidate students' mental structures. Numbered ideas are much more memorable than bullet lists.

Include infographics in your creations
To include references, we recommend that you use the APA Style Guide. According to these guidelines, each entry should include four basic elements: the author, publication date, title of the work, and source for retrieval.
Visual communication is a key tool to improve the teaching and learning process. It is easier for us to 'read' images than to read written text. That is why it is beneficial to create content for your classes that includes data within tables or graphs. Disciplines like Visual Thinking facilitate learning through the use of images, graphs, infographics, and simple drawings.

We are visual beings
We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
