Brain state model

Survival state- Am I safe? The survival state prioritizes personal safety, triggering the question "Am I safe?" in stressful situations.

The traffic light visual models the brain states in the way-

  • Red means stop/ be alert
  • Yellow means be cautious
  • Green means to be regulated/ready to go

Emotional state- Am I loved? The emotional state focuses on feelings of belonging and affection, asking "Am I loved?" during social interactions.

Executive state- What can I learn? The executive state supports learning and problem-soving, prompting "What can I learn?" when making decisions.

Having labeled tubs and trays around the classroom.

As a teacher after you see contribution suh as that you should encourage the behavior so that it continues.

"Go ahead and grab a beaker, dropper, and a tube for this science lab!"

After having a tough time on a problem instead of being frustrated you ask a friend for help

"A student notices that a classmate is struggling on a question and decides to help them out."

Teach calming techniques all throughout the school year

As a student reads a book they process certain things throughout the reading.

For a weeks worth of assignments I can set goals to finish them all on time.

"students being able to put the classroom together after arts and crafts."

"Before we all get up and leave we have a few reminders to go over for the homework."

"You have 10 minutes to divide and conquer this worksheet with a partner."

Having that school day objective prior to class

Waiting to speak after raising your hand.

Having a name generator on the board/ picking out popsicle sticks

Set reachable goals along the way

Class schedule posted on the board

When it rains outside during recess and you have to get active somehow.

Use attention-grabbers!"To infinity"/"And beyond!"

Listening and participating during story time.

Ask students to reflect on the reading piece for understanding.

Staying in the classroom and making a dance party!

Timers on the board! Your students will be able to see how much time they are working with.

After the bell rings students know to go to their seats and start on morning work without being asked.

As a teacher you will have to give clear directions...maybe even repeat it one more time :)
