Signifcance to astronomy
he Taosi culture made a significant contribution to astronomy by developing and utilizing what is believed to be the earliest astronomical observatory in ancient china. This observatory allowed them to develop a sophisticated solar calendar for seasonal tracking, which was vital for agricultural and political activities..
How it works
The taosi observatory worked by using a central observation point and a series of pillar-like structures with narrow gaps. Observers stood at the center and watched the sunrise through the gaps , which were aligned with specific points on a distant mountain ridge. The particular gap the rose through indicated the specific season or solar term.
information it provides
The Taosi Observatory provided ancient Chinese rulers with the astronomical information necessary to create a solar-lunar calendar for agricultural planning and to consolidate political power. Dating to around 2100 BC, it is one of the earliest known observatories in the world.
