Influence on music
Francis Lai made a lasting mark on music with his gift for melody and his international success. He became known as a symbol of French romanticism. His Oscar and Golden Globe wins in 1970 for Love Story, especially the theme "Where Do I Begin?", showed how far his influence reached. For many years, he was the top-selling French composer worldwide. His music became closely linked to the emotional films of Claude Lelouch, with whom he worked on more than thirty-five movies. Lai's scores, known for their simple and warm style, were recorded before filming so Lelouch could use them to guide the actors and shape each scene.
