BARROWS A small community in the north of Alaska, which has grown bigger and also more diverse. 99 Percent were Native and now only 6% are. Inupiat Natives are outnumbered, yet they still celebrate their heritage, keep their traditions, culture and remember where they come from.

CROSS CULTURE COMMUNICATION IN ALASKA They don't understand one another, so the Alaska university created classes of cross culture communication to ease the tensions between the two groups of people. There is miscomunication and misunderstanding between the two cultures (the Outsiders and the natives), the people in small villages are not used to speaking with strangers. A long time ago, during the settlement, children were put in boarding schools and were forced to abandon their language, so they had communication problems with their own family. Moreover, there are many different native languages among the tribes.

SETTLEMENT: The natives Lost their lands, their culture began to disappear. Many were killed because of diseases that were brought by the settlers. They were chased from their territory Alaskans were forced to adapt to a new way of life. They had to give a part of their territory. They fought for 5 years for their rights. The 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) gave back 45.5 million acres of public land to Native villages and regional Native corporations.

1. First, Peaky Blinders deals with the heavy weight brought by WWI without over-dramatizing it. The show evokes the atmosphere of sadness and despair that prevailed at the time. Secondly, it shows how the Great War completely upended (= bouleverser) British society to the point that people had no faith in authority and technology anymore. The ensuing (= following) decadence of the “Roaring Twenties” is depicted as a way to cope with (= faire face à) the trauma of the war. Last but not least, Peaky Blinders portrays post-war Britain as being in the grip of (= aux prises) a political unrest (= agitation)that threatened social order.

We can see some similitudes and differences between the real Peaky Blinders and the ones on the TV show. First, they both existed and they were both dressed the same way. They were elegant, wore peaky caps and flashy scarves. Then, there are also differences. The Real Peaky Blinders were more violent than the fictional ones, they did not belong to the same family and weren't called Shleby.

Aunt Polly Gray Physical and moral Description (les adjectifs composés ou non) Aunt Polly Gray has a striking and commanding physical presence that reflects her inner strength and authority. She is a middle-aged woman, elegant, with sharp features that convey both beauty and severity. Her face is defined by high cheekbones, expressive eyes, and a controlled, often unreadable expression. Her gaze is intense and penetrating, capable of intimidating enemies and silencing allies without a word. Polly dresses with deliberate sophistication, favoring tailored dresses, fur coats, hats, and bold jewelry. Her style blends femininity and power, signaling her high status within the Shelby family and the criminal underworld. Every element of her appearance suggests control, confidence, and self-awareness. Even in moments of grief or vulnerability, she maintains a dignified exterior, using her appearance as a form of armor. Her posture is upright and assured, and her movements are purposeful. Polly’s physical presence alone communicates authority, making it clear that she is not merely a supporting figure but one of the central pillars of the Peaky Blinders.

Exemples: - Reading is important. (Lire est important.) - Flying makes me nervous. Voler (en avion) me rend nerveux. * Le gérondif peut aussi être complément du verbe to be. Exemples: - My favorite hobby is reading. Mon loisir favori est lire.- My main duty is attending meetings. Mon principal devoir est d’assister à des réunions. * Le gérondif après une préposition. Exemples: - She is good at painting. Elle est bonne en peinture.- Can you sleep without having brushed your teeth? Est-ce que tu peux dormir sans t’être brossé les dents. ?- There is no point in going there so early. Il n’y aucune raison d’aller là si tôt. * Le Gerondif peut indiquer une négation- Exemples - He enjoys not working. Il aime ne pas travailler.- She loves not doing anything. Elle aime ne rien faire.
