What was the Central or Main Idea?

Let's think about the story. Do you remember what the story was about? What was the central or main idea of the story?

BACK

Click on me to hear me read the question.

Even small actions made a BIG difference. That’s why it’s important to do our part. Because your choices matter, too.

The central or main idea is that what we do matters...no matter how big or small it is... Because.. it can change someone’s life.

Let's talk a little more about what happened in the story... What do you think would have happened to the girl if the uncle hadn’t gotten sick? What if no one had ever learned to play an instrument?

In the story, everyone had a different job to do... the composer, the musicians, the orchestra librarian, the usher who helped them find their seats...

Franz Schubert was the composer who wrote the music in our story. Click on the picture of Franz Schubert to learn more about him!

Hello again, friends! Welcome to my Music Room. Let’s talk about music…

That’s right! A composer is someone who writes music. Composers tell stories with sounds.

In the book... we heard about a man named Franz who wrote the music that inspired the girl. Do you know what we call someone who writes music?

Click on the copy of Serenade on the piano to listen!

It is usually written to share feelings of love, joy, or admiration... Kind of like giving someone a musical gift.

As you listen, close your eyes and imagine what story the music might be telling. Does it sound happy, peaceful, or maybe even a little dreamy? If you had to pick a color to describe it, what color would it be?

In just a minute, I am going to let you hear one of Franz Schubert’s most famous compositions, Serenade.

Now that we know a little bit more about the composer Franz Schubert, we should probably listen to one of his compositions.

You may be wondering… What is a serenade?

Well, a serenade is a piece of music that is often calm and gentle.

Serenades can be played for a special person, a group of friends, or even just to make people feel happy.

A composition is a fancy word for a piece of music that a composer writes.

Just like Franz Schubert left his mark on the world by sharing his thoughts and feelings through music, you can leave your mark too!

Do you think your mark would be a musical one?!

Speaking of art… Do you know what we call someone who creates art?

Click on the picture of him to find out more!

Hello again, friends! I see you have found my art studio!

His name is Caspar David Friedrich.

I love to come here when I want to share my thoughts using colors, shapes, lines, and images to create a piece of art.

That’s right! An artist! An artist is someone who tells stories using colors, shapes, lines, and all kinds of things that you can see.

There is a very special artist I want to introduce you to who lived during the same time as Franz Schubert.

Click on the painting to get started!

One of his most famous paintings is called Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog.

I have a print of it right here on my easel, and I am planning to show it in my art gallery. But I need your help!

The gallery is very quiet, and I want to choose the perfect song to play in the room where this painting will be displayed.

Yes! Caspar David Friedrich was an artist! His paintings told stories using colors, shapes, and scenes from nature.

Take a closer look at the painting. Notice the colors, shapes, and the feelings it gives you.

After you explore the painting, you will listen to four different pieces of music.

Your job is to choose the one that sounds most like the way the painting feels.

If you left your mark on the world, do you think it would be through art?

Just like Caspar David Friedrich made his mark on the world by sharing his thoughts and feelings through his art, you can share yours too!
