Language proficiency

Spanish 3 Proficiency

The only way to begin speaking in a new language is to... ...begin speaking it badly.

ACTFL Language Proficiency Levels

Welcome Spanish 3 with Srta. Formoso! As you embark on your journey to learn a new language, it's important to understand the framework that guides your progress. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has established a set of proficiency levels to help us track your development and help you reach your language-learning goals.

examples of proficiency levels

Describe it using simple sentences with a few limited details. Use “I like”, “It has” and “It is”. Use “and” and “with.”

Describe something using only SIMPLE words. There can be spelling errors and wrong words like a kid would make.

Describe it using sentences with simple details (5 Ws). Explain your opinion with “because” and “but.” Ask a simple question.

Describe it using detailed sentences in 1 simple paragraph. Combine some sentences and use transitions like “for example.” Include a few errors like wrong prepositions.

Describe it in one paragraph by retelling a past experience and connect it to the audience. Include a topic sentence and some compound sentences. Use idiomatic phrases and very descriptive vocabulary.

Students who wish to reassess must meet with the teacher for a feedback session within 5 days of getting assessment back.

Intermediate Level (Intermediate Low to Intermediate High): In your sophomore year and beyond, you'll progress into the intermediate level. Here, you start to express yourself more fully. You can engage in more complex conversations about familiar topics like family, hobbies, and daily routines. Your vocabulary expands, and you begin to read and write short paragraphs or essays.

Students must complete at least 50% of a test or quiz in order to be eligible to reassess.

For grades lower than a 90% on summative assessments, students will have the opportunity to redo the assessment to receive up to a score of a 90%.

For projects/tests that have multiple components, students will be able to reassess separate components as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. completed / submitted original assessment on time (**late submissions will not be eligible for reassessment and will also be subject to late policy**)

Assessment must adhere to the original deadline. Late submissions will not be eligible for reassessment, and will also be subject to late policy.

Advanced Level (Advanced Low to Advanced High): By the time you're an upperclassman, you're reaching the advanced levels. You can discuss a wide range of topics with fluency and detail. Your reading and writing skills become more sophisticated, and you can express opinions and ideas in essays or presentations. You'll explore culture, literature, and current events in your target language.

Projects must have all components completed to be eligible for reassessment.

Cell Phone Policy

  • Students are required to place their cell phones in the phone caddy at the start of each class. No student should have access to their phones during instructional time.
  • Any student who refuses to comply should be escorted by security to their respective AP. Do not engage
  • Students who are leaving the room for roundtrip, leave the phones in the caddies. Students leaving for a one-way trip, take their phones.
  • Any student discovered using a phone during instructional time should be escorted by security to their respective AP.
  • Students can retrieve their phones during any type of classroom evacuation/lockdown and should put phones back in caddies at the conclusion of the drill
  • Students should retrieve their phones at the bell ending that class period.
  • Students are permitted to use phones before school, during the change of classes, during lunch, and at dismissal

Novice Level (Novice Low to Novice High): At this stage, you're laying the foundation for language acquisition. You're learning the basics—vocabulary, greetings, and simple phrases. You can introduce yourself, engage in basic conversations, and understand straightforward questions and statements. Think of it as building your language toolkit.

All formative assessments must be completed before the summative assessment in order to be eligible to reassess.
