Objectives Ice Breaker Structured Literacy Accommodations & Modifications Questions

Objectives

Promote Equity and Engagement

Apply Inclusive Strategies

Identify & Differentiate Supports

Teachers will understand how accommodations and modifications foster access, participation, and academic growth for students with diverse learning needs while maintaining high expectations.

Teachers will learn practical strategies (visuals, scaffolds, assistive technology, small group instruction, etc.) to support diverse learners in reading, writing, speaking, and listening tasks.

Teachers will be able to explain the difference between accommodations and modifications in ELA instruction and identify examples of each.

Structured Literacy

A systematic, explicit instruction that provides a strong cord of foundational skills in the language systems of English. Integrates listening, speaking, spelling, and writing. Emphasizes the structure of language across the speech sound system, writing system, the structure of sentences, the meaningful parts of words, the relationship among words, and the organization of spoken and written discourse. SL includes science-based, structured approach to literacy instruction. SL can be defined as “an approach that provides a framework to include both the principles of effection instruction (how we should teach) and the elements (what we should teach)” (Orton-Gillingham, 2022).

“Explicit, clear, and correct teaching of foundational skills will include “clear and accurate teacher pronunciation of sounds (phonemes), visual aids, explanation of rules for sound and spelling patterns, articulation of objective to students, and modeling of blending, segmenting, or other content-specific tasks”.
