How much does each SPF protect you?
The levels of protection from 0 to 50
Did you know that SPF 50 (which allows 2% of ultraviolet B rays through your skin) allows 50% less ultraviolet B rays to go through your skin than SPF 30? Though suncreen plays a big part in protecting your skin, remember to reapply it and also wear a hat when it is sunny.

What do I do when I get sunburn?
Aloe vera gel's benefits
While it is unable to prevent sunburns, aloe vera gel can relieve your pain when you are sunburned. It has anti-inflammatory properties to calm down your skin and can prevent it from peeling. It also feels nice since it is cool.

Why do we get sunburn?
Your body's way of preventing skin cancer
Ultraviolet is a kind of radiation so it can mess with the DNA inside of your skin cells. In order for these cells to not have the chance to become cancerous, they sacrifice themselves by going through apoptosis (programmed cell death). Skin cancer can happen if ultraviolet rays mutate the genes in a skin cell and it doesn't destroy itself.

How is ultraviolet intensity measured?
Coppell's ultraviolet index
This summer, the ultraviolet index of Coppell has been able to reach 9.8. The EPA considers this to be very high and recommends that you wear suncreen when the ultraviolet index is at least a 3. Even on cloudy days, 80% of ultraviolet rays can penetrate clouds, so it is best to still wear sunscreen even if it is not sunny outside.
