Ecological Initiative of Chania is an environmental NGO in the island of Crete, in the southern part of Greece, founded in 1989.
RECYCLING
Ecological Initiative of Chania originally started with a campaign for the use of Recycling as a solution to the waste problem in the city of Chania in the western part of Crete
Protection of lakes
The first issue of our ecological newspaper "Fourogatos" (the name of the wildcat of Crete) in 1994 campaigned for the protection of lake Agia
Annually, we organise the Fest of the Birds in lake Agia in the first Sunday of October
Fest of the Birds
Also in springtime in lake Agia with kids in cooperation with Environmental Education Center of Vamos
Our longest campaign was for the protection of the public beaches and forest of Agioi Apostoloi near Chania against privatization and against the building of hotels and congress center. Today it is a free public space for all.
Among the actions organised by the commitee against privatization of the beach was "Kites against selling the beach"
