Our estate is located in the Barossa Valley, in South Australia. The terroir here is a combination of warm climate, ancient soils, gentle hills and low rainfall.
Two-thirds of the vineyard is planted on sandy loam and clay-limestone soil, while the remaining third lies on red clay and schist soil. Some slopes are covered with gravelly soil, which improves drainage.
Our plots are spread across hillsides and valley floors, with a variety of sun exposures. Most of our vines are planted on south-facing and east-facing slopes, which protect the grapes from excessive afternoon heat. This diversity creates many microclimates.
We also benefit from gentle afternoon breezes, which help keep the grapes healthy. The vines are old – some are more than 80 years old – and their deep roots give great complexity to the wines.
