Exposure prevention is extremely important to avoid transmissible diseases. If exposed, early intervention and management of potentially infectious diseases can minimize the impact of bloodborne pathogens. 🛡️ Follow Universal Precautions
- Treat all blood and bodily fluids as potentially infectious.
- Assume exposure risk is present, even if the source appears healthy.
🧤 Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Wear gloves, face shields, gowns, and eye protection as needed.
- Replace PPE immediately if damaged or contaminated.
🧼 Practice Good Hygiene
- Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves or contact with blood/OPIM.
- Avoid touching your face during and after exposure until hands are clean.
🧹 Handle Sharps Safely
- Never recap, bend, or break needles.
- Dispose of sharps in designated, puncture-resistant containers.
🧯 Clean and Disinfect Surfaces
- Use approved disinfectants on contaminated surfaces and equipment.
- Follow proper spill cleanup procedures.
📋 Report and Respond
- Immediately report any exposure incidents to your supervisor.
- Follow your facility’s exposure control plan and seek medical evaluation.
