Society The Cañari live in the southern regions of Ecuador. They are recognized for their traditions in farming, festivals, clothing, and healing. The name reflects a rich cultural and ancestral heritage. According to some interpretations, the name reflects the belief of the Cañari people, ancestors were the snake and the macaw. Others propose that these animals were considered sacred by the Cañari people. In the past they were known for their resistance to Inca rule and later alliance with the Spanish against the Inca. Today, they are a distinct cultural group, with many descendants of mixed heritage, who maintain unique traditions in clothing, festivals, agriculture, and healing practices.
EPSULA recommends watching Interview with Segundo Melchor Duchi LINKS to other videos from the same region inhabited by Cañari communities
