Society The Waorani live in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In the not-too-distant past, their subsistence was based mainly on hunting and gathering wild fruits. Since the 1950s, when they came into contact with missionaries and extractive companies, the Waorani communities began to settle permanently in their villages. Since then, their ancestral territory has been reduced and is now affected by logging, oil and mining exploitation. Even so, most Waorani people continue to maintain their traditional way of life, relying heavily on the land, rivers and jungle, from which they obtain everything they need to live: from food through hunting, fishing and plant cultivation, to medicinal plants used in traditional medicine. In recent times, they have also turned to tourism. In their communities, they welcome both national and international tourists who wish to learn about their way of life.
