Reflective QuestionsConsider the following questions after watching the videos:

1. How do we use data to improve our lives?2. How do we use data to protect Earth? 3. How do we use data to inform laws? 4. How do we use data to improve education? 5. How do you use data to make decisions?

Purpose: Students will brainstorm potential data sources to address a mixed-methods research question, to gain a deeper understanding of how a topic and research question can be explored and addressed using various forms of data. Scenario: The school board has invited student researchers to help them understand the student experience at your high school, so they can improve the quality of students' experience by allocating resources appropriately. Research Teams will address the research question: What is the overall student experience at X (your school) High School?

Task: Data Capture

Preparation: Provide student groups, pairs, or individuals with blank paper or chart paper and arrange seating accordingly. 1. Review the scenario to the left. 2. Brainstorm potential data types and sources to address the research question: What is the overall student experience at X (your school) High Shcool? (10 minutes) 3. Discuss why students selected the data type and source. How will it help them answer the research question and add to the school board's understanding of the student experience? Remember a single data source will not fully address the question! 4. Check the ChatGPT output in response to the same prompt and compare it to the students' brainstorming ideas. 5. Discuss the advantages of data types and sources in answering the research question. 6. Consider potential issues with data collection and generate possible solutions as a class.

Task: Let's analyze the benefits and limitations!

Focus groups combine aspects of interviewing and participant observation; they are interviews, not discussion groups, problem-solving sessions, or decision-making groups. Focus groups consist of 8 to 12 participants who share characteristics relevant to the research topic. Initially used as a market research tool to assess the appeal of various products, the focus group technique is used by other sectors, such as education, for gathering data on specific topics.

Purpose: Students will think critically about data collection.1. Review the analysis form. 2. Watch the video. 3. Respond to the form either in your PREP journal or discuss with a partner. 4. Reflect: How does thinking critically about data collection change your approach to selecting a data collection method?
