Marketing departments frequently employ email and texts to keep companies in touch with their customer base and inform them of new products, sales and potential discounts. ___________________________________________________________________ Yet hiding in there could well be a message from someone impersonating a company in an attempt to get your personal information in a scam known as phishing. They generally contain links that will take you to a fake website where fraudsters will encourage you to enter personal information including bank details. ___________________________________________________________________ The best way to avoid these is to never click on links in unsolicited emails and texts and if there’s an offer made that is of interest to you, go and look for it on the company’s website first.
This is so standard now that online mail accounts often have a tab for these automated types of emails to separate them from that birthday message from your aunt or your travel plans with friends.
This can then be used as the basis for future scams and can create a sense of trust as thescammer will already know some of your personal details when they call.
- This can then be used as the basis for future scams and can create a sense of trust as the scammer will already know some of your personal details when they call.
- The best advice here is to never send anyone money unless you have known them for some years and have met them in person.
- As with phishing, it’s an attempt to get your bank details and target your earnings.
- Romance scams tend to play on the emotions of the target with the scammer saying that they are in danger, or need money for something urgent.
- Even if you’ve alerted the bank, they will be hard-pressed to take any legal action.

Related to phishing is ‘vishing’ - a combination of ‘voice’ and ‘phishing’ - where you will receive a call from ascammer who pretends to be your bank. They will often use a false emergency, such as a security breach and the bank and ask you to move your money to a new account. They may even encourage you to call them by saying that a high value item has been charged to your account and you need to call a given number if you don’t recognize it. ___________________________________________________________________ Should you receive an unexpected call from your bank, tell them you will get back to them and phone the bank’s number on your card.

Dating apps are such a convenient and familiar way to begin a relationship these days that people quickly forget they don’t always know who they are really talking to when they match with someone. ___________________________________________________________________ This will usually happen once the victim has been made to feel special and is personally invested in the person they have met, having been groomed over a period of time. The effects can be devastating emotionally and financially as it’s natural for anyone to build a picture in their head of the person they are speaking to without realizing they’re being taken for a ride. ___________________________________________________________________ Even then, caution is advised.

Reading 2
Comedian is a deceptively simple work, meant as a criticism of the amount of business and money in the art world. Its absurdity follows earlier ideas that challenged traditional artistic ideas. For instance, Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1917) - an ordinary toilet urinal - caused a lot of anger at the time, but is now seen as an important creative work. Like Fountain, Comedian also questions how art is actually valued, emphasising ideas over physical form.
Reading 2
Comedian has certainly created significant discussion. "It’s a provocation, it’s meant to be ridiculous," says Matthew Slotover, a co-founder of London’s Frieze art fair and a fan of the work. "It’s a very basic, valueless object. And its attachment to the wall couldn’t be more simple and un-artistic. It’s an absurd thing to do and absurd that people would pay money for it, but that is very much a part of the work." The fact it has been eaten twice - by artist David Datuna at Art Basel and later by a hungry South Korean student in Seoul - shows how meaningless the object itself actually is.
Reading 2
Sun describes Comedian as a "cultural phenomenon", viewing the purchase as more than an investment. He also stated that he would also eat the banana, adding another chapter to the story. He will receive a roll of tape and one banana, as well as a certificate of authenticity and official instructions for installing the work. The true value of Comedian lies in the certificate, which proves that it is Cattelan’s creation. The original banana - now perhaps the most expensive fruit ever sold - was actually bought for $0.35.
Reading 2
In interviews given since it was first shown in 2019, Cattelan has described Comedian as a commentary. He said it was "not a joke," calling it "a reflection on what we value." Sun may have paid rather a lot for his banana and tape, but he is not the only owner of the concept. His purchase was for just one of three versions of the work, meaning that the idea itself will have two other owners.
