Conventional Wisdom refers to widely accepted beliefs or ideas that are often taken for granted as true, without much critical examination. Some conventional wisdom may perpetuate negative or limiting beliefs about ourselves or the world, preventing personal growth and positive change. Challenging widely held beliefs can lead to new insights, innovation, and better decision-making.

Teacher/Student Notes

Question it

"You should finish what you start.""If it’s meant to be, it will happen." "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." "Follow your passion, and the money will follow." "Money doesn't buy happiness." "Time heals all wounds." "Honesty is the best policy." "Laughter is the best medicine."

What's next?

Explore the resources in Step 5 to further examine research question development, then learn about data collection methods in Step 6.

Reflective Questions Consider the following questions based on Neirotti's request: "Please, if you do not know Why you do it, do not do it!"

1. What do you think of Neirotti's request? 2. What's the point of asking why we do what we do? 3. Which behaviors are so routine that you've never questioned them? 4. What opportunities arise from questioning why we do what we do? 5. Why can't students wear hats in most schools?

Task: Let's question it!

Social Media: Let's question it!

Purpose: Understanding the significance of questioning and practicing the mindset motivates students to approach the development of their research questions with care. Here, students will formulate questions to prepare for a class discussion on one Question Focus stimulus. Preparing questions for a debate is like preparing research questions. Step 5 in Hopscotch 4-AP Research details how to formulate research questions aligned with research approaches. Note: Instructors determine if time permits discussion. To prepare for discussion (optional), students should investigate their questions and plan for participation.

Question Formulation Technique (QTF)

Purpose: The QFT builds the skill of asking questions, an essential — yet often overlooked — lifelong learning skill that allows people to think critically, feel greater power and self-efficacy, and become more confident and ready to participate in civic life. Source: The Question Formulation Technique (QFT) was created by the Right Question Institute (rightquestion.org)

Preparation: Provide student groups, pairs, or individuals with blank paper or chart paper and arrange seating accordingly. 1. Review the purpose of the Question Formulation Technique. 2. Read and discuss the rules for producing questions in response to the Question Focus stimulus on the left. 3. Select a Question Focus stimulus. 4. Produce questions in response to the Question Focus stimulus following the rules. Time: 4-5 minutes. 5. 6. 7. 8. Prepare for discussion about the Question Focus stimulus. (Optional) 9. Discuss the Question Focus stimulus. (Optional)

Rules for producing questions in response to Question Focus stimulus:

  • Ask as many questions as you can.
  • Do not stop to discuss, judge, or answer the questions.
  • Write down every question exactly as it is stated.
  • Change any statement into a question.
  • Follow the rules each time you use the technique.

Question Focus Stimulus Options

Improve questions!

1. Social Media is transforming the historical record. 2. Social media is democratizing the historical record. 3. Social media is a weapon.

Prioritize questions!

Conventional Wisdom: Let's question it!

Purpose: Understanding the significance of questioning and practicing the mindset motivates students to approach their research question development with care. Here, students engage in more practice using QTF and conventional wisdom Question Focus options. Note: Instructors /students determine how to use this extra practice.

Reflective Questions Consider the following questions in response to "Why do kids ask so many questions—and why do they stop?"

1. What are the strengths of the argument? 2. What are the weaknesses of the argument?3. What other factors can stifle questioning? 4. When do you feel comfortable asking questions? 5. When do you feel uncomfortable asking questions?
