Do's & Don'ts

  • Tipping is not compulsory, but it is customary/recommended/nicer in India to give tips to people who render you services.
For example: → restaurants: around 10% of the bill → guide: approx. 2700 Rs per day (approx 30€) → driver: approx. 1350 Rs per day (approx 15€)
  • Take off your shoes to enter a temple, mosque, gurudwara or a house if you're invited in.
  • Make sure you always have a stole to cover your shoulders, if your attire is sleevless, when visiting temple, mosque, gurudwara.
  • Unless the person takes the initiative, don't shake hands.
  • Fold your hands to say "Namaste". Like many Indians, you can greet them by clasping your hands under your chin and bowing your head.
  • Indians will often answers with a sideways nod and a broad smile (our European “no”) - in India this means yes or no ;-D
  • The notion of time is a little different in India. In the big cities, traffic, fog or unforeseen circumstances on the road can sometimes cause delays. Indians are used to these setbacks and, unlike us Westerners, rarely show impatience.

IN YOUR SUITCASE

Travel Pharmacy (recommended items) : No mandatory vaccines are currently required for India. However, we recommend consulting your doctor before departure for personalized advice.

  • Tropical mosquito repellent spray (the brand 5 sur 5 Tropic is particularly effective)
  • Mosquito repellent plug-in device for hotel rooms
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Anti-diarrheal medication
  • Intestinal antiseptic
  • Anti-nausea/anti-vomiting medication
  • High-quality sunscreen
  • Healing/cicatrizing cream

Clothing & Packing Tips : India is a modern country, yet most women dress conservatively. In order to feel comfortable and avoid unwanted attention, modest clothing is recommended—especially in Varanasi, a deeply spiritual city where temples and ghats play a central role.

  • Light, breathable clothing (cotton or linen) adapted to warm and humid weather
  • A light scarf or shawl (handy for temple visits and protection from the sun)
  • Comfortable walking shoes/sandals (ideal for exploring the city and ghats)
  • Socks (sometimes required when entering temples barefoot)
  • Modest outfits for temples (shoulders and knees should be covered)
  • Sun hat or cap, and sunglasses
  • A small backpack or crossbody bag for day excursions
