POLITICAL CHANGES 1750-1820

THE RISE OF THE NDWANDWE KINGDOM UNDER ZWIDE and THE MFECANE/DIFAQANE
WHO WAS ZWIDE KaLANGA

Zwide was a powerful king of the Ndwandwe clan from the late 1700s to the early1800s. he is one of the key figures that started and contributed to the Mfecane.

he expanded his state from a chiefdom to a kingdom through militarisation and centralisation. this is because it's easier to control people as a king with a powerful army.

He used amabutho to wage war and conquer other kingdoms.

MILITARISATION/ CENTRALISATION

CENTRALISATION-Giving all the power of a kingdom or state to one ruler with very strict leadership heirarchies. e.g. North Korea, Saudi Arabia

MILITARISATION-Using military methods to gain power, especially by using violence and force. the army is usually large and permanent. the ruler promotes military growth and development to prepare for war.

AMABUTHO: warriors

These were young men who would be trained to be the kingdom's first line of defence. they protected the king, women and children and were the ones to wage war on behalf of their leader. They were divided into different factions according to age and experience to form armies.
