man's fall into sin

Part 2 Temptation & Decision

Adam and Eve had plenty of trees with food, so there was nothing unfair about the one rule. God's command was not that difficult to obey. All went well until the serpent entered the conversation. He is described as the most beautiful and clever animal in the Garden, not at all like the slithering, poisonous serpent today. The serpent was familair to Eve and may even have been a favorite pet. Knowing that Eve was drawn to this alluring creature, Satan indwelt the serpent to tempt her to turn against God. The voice came from the serpent's mouth, but that voice was actually the voice of God's enemy.

The serpent baited Eve, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?" (Gen. 3:1b). Eve explained that they could eat from all the other trees, but if they ate from this one they would die (Gen. 3:2-3). The serpent replied, "You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil" (Gen. 3:4b-5). To put it in plain words, Satan said, "You'll die? That's absurd! God just doesn't want you to be as smart as He is."

The more Eve eyed the forbidden fruit, the more intrigued she became with being "like God." Before long, her volitin gave in to temptation and she turned against God. She made the choice to eat the fruit and immediately became a sinner. At that moment, she died spiritually—she was instantly separated from God. She was unable to have any relationship with Him.

When Adam returned, Eve handed him the fruit. There he stood, the ruler of earth, with the Word of God in his soul and a big decision to make. God had said, "You shall not eat." Adam ate. He chose to go against the command that God had given directly to him (Gen. 2:16-17). Adam had authority, and it was his responsibility to make sure that he and his wife obeyed. Instead, he followed Eve and disobeyed God.

Keep this in mind: there was no one to blame but themselves. Yes, Satan was evil in enticing them, but they had each made a choice to disobey God. You, too, have volition and make choices everyday. Temptations do not excuse bad decisions. Only YOU are accountable when you disobey God.
