Egypt is a North African country known for its ancient civilization, famous monuments like the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, and the Nile River.
Where is Egypt?
Egypt is a big country in North Africa. Its capital city is Cairo. Egypt borders Libya, Sudan, Israel, and the Gaza Strip. It has the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Red Sea in the east. The longest border is with Sudan. The name Egypt comes from the Greek word Aigyptos.
Land and Climate
Most of Egypt is desert.
There are oases and high mountains. Mount Catherine is the tallest mountain (2,629 m). Mount Sinai is important in religion. Egypt is hot and dry. In winter, rain and snow can fall in the Sinai mountains.
Cities and People
Cairo is the biggest city. About 21 million people live there.Alexandria and Giza are also large cities. Almost all Egyptians live near the Nile. Only a few people live in deserts. Arabic is the official language. Many people also learn English and French.
Famous Places
In Cairo, you can see the Egyptian Museum and old mosques.
Near Cairo is Giza, with the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx. Luxor has the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings, with tombs of pharaohs. Alexandria was famous for the lighthouse and the Great Library.
