Amelia Earhart
AVIATOR
Born – 1897, United States
Disappeared – 1937, Pacific Ocean
Little Amelia liked to collect insects, climb trees and race her sledge as fast as it would go, imagining she was flying like a bird. Amelia visited an air show, and watched the planes soar and swoop in the sky. How she longed to be up there with them! Later, she got her first ride in a plane. From that moment, she dreamt of being a pilot.

Amelia took lessons and bought a bright yellow plane, ‘The Canary’. After months of practising, she became the first woman to fly up to 4,267 metres. Later, she was invited to be the first woman to fly over the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger. The flight made her famous, but Amelia knew that women could fly planes just as well as men. She decided to repeat the journey, but this time all by herself. Amelia’s little plane flew over the vast, empty ocean, landing fourteen hours later – she had done it! Amelia was a hero around the world. Amelia went on to break many more flying records. She decided she wanted a new challenge: to fly around the world. Some people said the journey was crazy, but Amelia wasn’t afraid of adventures. She flew for thousands of miles, over stormy oceans and steamy jungles, until they reached the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Amelia sent a radio message that the fuel was running low. Soon afterwards, Amelia and her plane had vanished. The world mourned Amelia, the little girl who wanted to soar like a bird, who showed the world how high women can fly.
