Coco Chanel

FASHION DESIGNER Born – 1883, France Died – 1971, France

Little Coco always stood out from the crowd. At the strict orphanage where she lived, poor Coco found it impossible to follow the rules – she’d rather make her own. While the other girls played with toys, Coco sewed beautiful dresses for her dolls. She dreamt that one day, she would wear beautiful clothes herself. When she left the orphanage, Coco worked as a seamstress by day and sang on stage at night! Tumbling into bed, she dreamt of all the things she wanted to do. Coco started making hats for her friends, and soon opened her own hat shop. The mademoiselles of Paris loved Coco’s modern, simple designs, so different to the fussy styles they were used to.

One day, Coco was struck by a new thought. Why was it that men wore comfortable clothes that were easy to move around in, while women had to put up with billowing petticoats and tight corsets? Coco sewed herself a dress from some soft and stretchy fabric. The style was bold and different. But her friends liked it so much that Coco made more and more dresses. Her simple, elegant designs allowed women the same freedom and comfort as men. Soon, her rule-breaking creations became a sensation! Coco opened a fashion house in Paris. Women were inspired to wear trousers, just like Coco. The little girl who had once longed for beautiful clothes had become a worldwide fashion icon by doing things her own way. Coco Chanel remains one of the greatest fashion designers in history: the rebellious girl who changed women’s clothing forever.
