TOPENG KERTE

Wayang Topeng Kerte is a traditional performing art from Situbondo, originally brought from Madura in 1958 by a puppeteer named Kerte Wignyo. This art form combines dance, acting, and visual art, based on the Mahabharata epic. Characters are classified into three temperaments: Amarah (anger), Supiah (fertility), and Mutmainah (happiness). There are also five main character types, including Topeng Alos and Topeng Ksatria. In the past, hosting a Wayang Topeng Kerte show was a sign of wealth and prestige. Today, performances are rare due to modern influences, but the art remains a cultural treasure of Situbondo. Adapted by IDN times

LANDHUNG DANCE

Landhung Dance, also known as Lajher Pandhelungan, is a cultural icon of Situbondo. It was officially recognized as a traditional art by the Situbondo Regent in 2019. The word Landhung means "long," symbolizing Situbondo’s long coastal line. The dance has three levels: Landhung Cengker, Landhung Anom, and the main Landhung Dance. This dance reflects the diversity of Situbondo’s communities—from farmers to fishermen. Rich in harmonious movement and music, it is often showcased at the Situbondo cultural events. adapted from IDNtimes

REMO TRISNAWATI

Remo Trisnawati Dance is a unique traditional dance from Situbondo. Unlike the typical Remo Dance that is performed by men, this dance is performed by women. It was created in 1981 by local artist Trisnawati. The dance gained attention after being performed at a competition in Surabaya. Its growing popularity even led to international invitations. The dance features sharp, agile movements accompanied by traditional music. These movements symbolize the nature of women—strong and dynamic, yet also gentle and graceful. Today, Remo Trisnawati stands as a symbol of feminine strength and cultural pride in Situbondo. Adapted from IDN times

PA'BENG

Pa'beng is a traditional musical instrument from Bantal Village, Asembagus, Situbondo. Made from bamboo, it produces sounds similar to kenong, kendang, and gong. As a cultural symbol of the Pendalungan community, Pa’beng plays a significant role in traditional rituals. Traditionally, Pa’beng was used to entertain farmers guarding crops or to call for rain during dry seasons. However, it is now endangered due to the declining number of players and limited popularity among younger generations. Though rarely seen today, Pa’beng remains an important part of Situbondo’s rich cultural heritage. Adapted from TIMES
