On the last day of school

and in the afternoon sun as we play the most disorganised sweat-drenched game of rounders you’ve ever seen in yer life, Mr Joshua comes over to me.

How you doing, Nate?

Alright, Sir, I’m alright I really am.

He smiles and takes his shades off.

Told you it would be didn’t I, eh?

Now listen, Nate, do you remember way back at the start of the year when I told you I was proud of you even though I didn’t know you?

Well, Nate, I am so proud to know you now. So, so proud.

I want you to know That even when you’re at high school I’ll still be here, OK?

Any time you want to drop in and say hi, that’d be cool – and don’t forget me when you’re a famous poet, eh? I want a whole book dedicated to me, OK?

Sure, Sir, no problem and Sir – thank you, Sir.

We bump fists.

In the darkness we find our people, eh, Nate?

Yes, Sir, I guess we do.
