Super-Dad

It all began one winter, Inside an ice-cold hut; Six kids all a’shiver, All sleeping head-to-foot; When Mum decided it was time To make a cold, clean cut. It was Dad who found the letter, He came back looking stern. In his hand was a scrunched-up note. My stomach began to churn. And then he said those fateful words: “Mum has gone and won’t return.”

Well, that was the beginning, The start of something new, In the icy cold of winter When our hearts were torn in two. Dad left his job and soon became The captain of our crew. But money worries were what Dad had, With bills long overdue And six hungry little mouths to feed (He almost went cuckoo!), Especially when being stuck at home Meant we had no revenue!

Reveal Explainer

The word ‘hut’ and the reference to ‘six kids’ suggests that their house might be too small for the family and might not well-built or a might be bit shabby. The words ‘ice-cold’ and ‘all a’shiver’ suggest that the children are cold and uncomfortable. Staying warm is a challenge in a small, poorly heated home.
