“I just passed my exams to go to the River School!” Caro did not say anything. She just took the agbalumo solemnly and stared back at me. “Didn’t you hear what I said? I passed! I am going to boarding school!” “Yes, yes, I heard what you said.” “Then what is the matter with you? Why are you looking like that?” She avoided my eyes. If I didn’t know better I would have thought she was about to cry. She retied her wrapper and plunked herself at the bottom of the stairs. “Who will I play with now?” My heart skipped a beat. I had been so caught up in the excitement of the River School, I didn’t think about Caro being alone. Between her chores and running the kiosk, she would have no time to make new friends. Caro was good at everything from numbers to dancing to plucking fruit. “But you said you didn’t want to go.” “Yes, that was before.” Her voice began to shake. I sat down beside her. “There are some schools that you don’t need exams to enter.”

“You don’t understand.” She shook her head. “Nobody imagines me going to secondary school. All my siblings have stopped at primary school so why should I be different?” “Maybe because you didn’t tell them you want to go to school. If you just – ” “You can’t understand, Jummy. You don’t have any responsibilities. Your parents can help you with everything. I have to help my parents.” “My parents didn’t help me pass my exams, I studied very hard,” I snapped back at once. “Yes, but everyone in your house wants you to go to the River School. Nothing is in your way.” “Who told you? Before today, everyone thought I was too tiny to go to boarding school. They didn’t even think I could pass the exams. Some of the neighbours said I will not make it past a term in boarding school. Well, I will show them!” “Well, I am not you. Sometimes you just have to do things because of your family. But I cannot ask you to understand that!” “But Caro, there must be something you can – ” “O Jummy, just leave it, you can’t really understand it. It’ll be OK.”
