ACTIVITIES
Extra Resources
What you need
Paper, pencils, paints, other construction materials
Preparation
Teachers, parents and students discuss their ideas about an event or project that will contribute to the improvement of school’s or local society’s life (organizing book exhibition at school, providing help to stray animals, reforestation, support to homeless people)
Helpful Tips
Be positive in any activities the school invites you to participate
Think of all the different services that are available in your neighbourhood and how you can help them connect with the local school
Keep your child informed about all decisions and steps you are making
Do not overstep if your child wishes to maintain a space where parents are not involved.
Helpful Tips
At the beginning avoid giving an example story e.g. one story that your child already knows. Continue taking turns until you come to a natural ending. If a child gets stuck, try asking him/her questions: “How did this creature react? - “How did the kid feel?”
Goal
Help children understand that it is important to participate in school activities
Preparation
Find out where the neighbourhood association is located and how citizens can be involved. Choose an activity that is most suitable to you and your children
Goal
Help children participate actively in Family life by contributing to decision making
How to Reflect
Discuss with your child the significance of the collaboration between school, parents and the local association. Place emphasis on networking and the need to use all available resources.
How to Reflect
Ask each family member including children to contribute with at least two ideas taking into consideration time, cost and how others may feel about their choice. Discuss the pros and cons of each choice. Give time and space to reach a consensus. If that is not possible, ask them to meet again next week..
How to Reflect
Share thoughts on what can help us feel relief from stress and explain the need to keep away any electronic devices that might cause further anxiety.
Preparation
Choose a time that is suitable for you to join your child in a common activity
How to Reflect
Talk about the significance of taking part in community events, how this can make us develop healthy and safe spaces and feel connected with our neighbourhood and the people who live there.
Helpful Tips
Be a role model by demonstrating active citizenship in everyday life.Volunteer to assist with the organisation of an event or even offer your services in helping others (e.g. clean the local playground, help to develop a library, participate or run a music or dance group etc.). Encourage your child to propose their own ideas and involve their friends.
What you need
No material needed
How to do it
Since the project or event will take place together with school lessons, homework and family/social activities the participants need to set priorities and certain aims. All aims need to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound so that participants will be able to measure their progress and degree of realization. Moreover, they have to practice to use as much as possible techniques and means such as calendars, timers and to do lists, reminder notes and time estimations.
How to do it
Gather the family together in the living room and ask each one to contribute ideas on how to spend family vacations
Helpful Tips
Encourage participants to (a) schedule a meeting with themselves (b) look at the bigger picture of their to-do lists (c) announce their goals loudly (d) incorporate leisure activities, hobbies, and relaxation time into their plans and obligations for this project.
Extra Resources
Pictures/photos/movies from unusual events, people/children. All this material has to be carefully selected so that it is closely related to children’s life and of course to be child friendly.
How to do it
Set a date, at least once a week (e.g during weekends) to prepare together a healthy family meal. Ask him/her to take part in meal preparation , making the table and choosing a music he/she likes. After the meal, arrange time to visit the local park together or take a stroll by the sea. Coming back, ask him/her to choose their favored book and read together.
Preparation
Start discussing unusual events from your and or their life /everyday routine. Also, discuss feelings and impressions from those events. Ask for their ideas about changes that could help your family life and make it more interesting, exciting and pleasant.
How to do it
Explain you’re going to build a story. Each child will contribute to this fantastic story in turns, e.g. one sentence/one idea at a time. Give an exciting first sentence “Once upon a time, I was on a ship headed to an unknown sea and fuel began to run out… ”After the story is completed, ask children to write, draw or construct the most unusual part of the story so that they can give it as a present to his /her best friend.
Helpful Tips
Keep it fun and interactive.
Encourage your child to select which meal to prepare and what places to visit.
Try to maintain this routine at least once a week.
Change meals and places to make it more interesting.
Make it a family tradition to avoid turning on the television or using smartphones as these are not helpful in making contact or feeling relief from stress
How to do it
Participate with your child in at least one event per 2-3 months that your neighbourhood association offers. This could be collecting food and clothes for those in need, preparing a library from where children could borrow books or taking part in a local festival. If possible, volunteer to help with these events or help to prepare special courses e.g. drawing classes that could be offered for free to children in their local association. Explain the significance of these activities, encouraging your child to take an active role, feel closer to its community and get to know the other children who live there.
How to Reflect
Ask them what was the most rewarding for them part of this procedure e.g. talking to you, talking to their brothers/sisters, sending presents to others. How difficult it is to think and behave unusually.
What you need
Read about how stress can be relieved and think about possible sources of stress for you and your child
How to do it
Work together with the parent's association in preparing school activities during weekends. Volunteer to connect parent’s association with the local association and plan together how to prepare an open day at School where children, parents and teachers will work together to invite the neighbours, children from other schools, key-persons in the community and other associations (e.g. mental health associations/alzheimer centres etc.) to spend a day together, participate in various activities, run a food festival, see a children’s play and get to know each other.
Extra Resources
Give them ahead of time some info about the family budget available
Goal
Help children connect with the neighbourhood association
How to Reflect
Discuss together the impact of the activity, how it has benefited participants in their daily lives. Also discuss whether the techniques used helped them save time and feel confident that they will respond to new tasks effectively and within the set deadlines.
Extra Resources
List the events taking place in your local neighbourhood, select the ones that you prefer and best suit your time, ask your child to join you in some events at least once every 2-3 months.
Preparation
Prepare the time and space where it is suitable for all family members to join the discussion

Participate in school’s parent association and attend regularly their meetings-take part in the elections either by voting or even running for a position
Extra Resources
Make a list of meals that your child likes to prepare with you.
Make a list of favourite places you can visit together in your area.
Make sure that children are allowed to use smartphones or their computer only at a certain time agreed with you (preferably not more than one hour per day during weekends and half an hour per day during week days on specific times e.g. 17.00-18.00 or 17.00-17.30 accordingly).
