Main Aim
The goal of this activity is to help participants develop empathy and a deeper understanding of diversity by experiencing different perspectives and discussing the challenges faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds
Materials and preparation
- Prepare an empathy mapping template with sections like: "What does the person see?," "What do they hear?," "What do they feel?" and "What are their challenges?"
- Arrange the room with enough space for participants to break into small groups
Tools
- Printed role cards with different personal backgrounds
- Blindfolds (optional, for sensory diversity experiences)
- Large sheets of paper and markers
- A projector (optional, for additional multimedia elements)
Tips For The Trainer
- Ensure that the case studies reflect a variety of equity challenges that educators might encounter
- Encourage participants to think creatively about how they can address equity issues in their specific teaching contexts
- Create a safe and open environment for participants to discuss sensitive topics related to equity
NFE methods
- This activity is based on problem-solving, group discussions, and case study analysis. It encourages critical thinking and decision-making in real-world contexts
- If you don't feel comfortable with NFE methods, please check out this link
Learn Check /Debriefing
Debriefing & Learning Check (20 minutes)
- Guided Discussion: The facilitator asks reflection questions:
- How did you feel in your role?
- Did anything surprise you?
- How does this relate to your experiences as educators?
- Small Group Sharing: Participants write or discuss in pairs how they can apply this understanding to inclusive teaching practices
Tips For The Trainer
- Encourage open and respectful dialogue, ensuring a safe space for participants to share reflections
- Be mindful of emotional responses—some participants may feel uncomfortable confronting privilege and inequality
- Adjust the activity for different age groups or educational settings as needed
- Emphasize that the goal is awareness, not guilt, and that diversity should be celebrated as a strength
Handouts
- Key discussion points from the session
- Empathy mapping template
Tips For The Trainer
- Remind participants that empathy is a skill that can be developed with intentional practice
- Allow time for sharing personal reflections and ensure that each participant feels comfortable expressing themselves
- Encourage participants to reflect deeply on their own biases and how these might influence their teaching
Main Aim
The goal of this activity is to help participants identify equity issues in educational settings and explore practical solutions to ensure all students have equal opportunities to succeed
Tools
- Case Study Handouts (describing real or hypothetical scenarios)
- Flipcharts or whiteboards
- Markers
Materials and preparation
- Prepare a set of role cards describing individuals with diverse characteristics (e.g., different socioeconomic statuses, gender identities, disabilities, cultural backgrounds)
- Ensure an open space where participants can move around freely
- Set up a flipchart or screen to summarize key discussion points
Session Description
Ice Breaker (15 minutes)
- Diversity Bingo: Each participant receives a bingo sheet with personal characteristics (e.g., “Speaks more than one language,” “Has lived in another country”). Participants mingle and find peers who fit each characteristic.
Main Activity (40 minutes)
- Step into Someone’s Shoes: Participants randomly receive a role card and are asked to imagine they are that person.
- Privilege Walk: The facilitator reads out statements (e.g., “You can easily find books that represent your culture”; “You feel safe expressing your identity in public”). Participants step forward or remain in place based on whether the statement applies to their assigned role.
- Reflection Circle: Participants discuss how it felt to step into different perspectives and how privilege and diversity shape experiences.
Learn Check /Debriefing
Debriefing & Learning Check (30 minutes)
- Group Reflection: The facilitator leads a final discussion to reflect on the activity, asking:
- What were the main equity issues raised in your case study?
- How did you approach solving these issues?
- What strategies can you use to address similar issues in your classroom?
- Participants write down one specific action they will take to promote equity in their teaching
Materials and preparation
- Prepare several case study handouts, each describing a specific equity dilemma (e.g., unequal access to resources, a biased disciplinary system, etc.)
- Ensure the space allows for group work and discussions
Learn Check /Debriefing
Debriefing & Learning Check (20 minutes)
- Reflection Discussion: Participants discuss how empathy mapping can help them understand the challenges that students from diverse backgrounds face.
The facilitator asks:
- How did this exercise change your perspective on diversity?
- How can empathy mapping help in creating a more inclusive environment?
- Closing Thought: Participants write down one action they can take to promote inclusivity in their classrooms based on what they learned from the activity
NFE methods
- This activity is based on Non-Formal Education (NFE) methods, including experiential learning, role-playing, and group discussions.
- If you don't feel comfortable with NFE methods, please check out this link
Session Description
Ice Breaker (15 minutes)
- Common Ground: The trainer asks participants to share one personal experience related to diversity. These could be positive or challenging experiences that have shaped their perspective. The group then discusses common themes that emerge
Main Activity (45 minutes)
- Empathy Mapping: Participants are divided into small groups and given an empathy mapping template. Each group is assigned a different individual from a diverse background (e.g., a student with a disability, a refugee student, a student from a low-income family).
- Groups are asked to fill in the template with responses to questions about what that person might see, hear, feel, and experience in their school environment
- After completing the empathy map, each group presents their findings to the larger group
Handouts
• Role description cards
• Bingo sheets for the ice breaker
• Summary of key takeaways from the session
Session Description
Ice Breaker (15 minutes)
- Equity in a Word: Participants are asked to describe equity in one word. The facilitator writes these words on a board and briefly discusses their different meanings
Main Activity (45 minutes)
- Case Study Analysis: Participants are divided into small groups and given a case study. Each case study describes a real-world dilemma related to equity, such as a teacher’s struggle with providing equal opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds
- Groups analyze the case, identify the equity issues, and propose practical solutions. They then share their findings with the larger group
- After each group shares, the facilitator opens the floor for discussion, asking participants to evaluate the proposed solutions and consider how they might apply them in their own classrooms
Activity Title
“The Equity Dilemma: How Would You Respond?”
Main Aim
The aim of this activity is to help participants understand the real-life experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds and consider how these experiences impact their learning and classroom interactions
NFE methods
