GLOBAL & BRAZILIAN URGENCY
1) Earth’s limits are broken. CC is critical ! We need fair action now. (Rockström et al., 2023)
4) The Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes reached record burned areas in 2024 — the highest in the last 40 years (RAF, 2025)
2) In 171 years, Brazil became the global’s 4th largest CO₂ emitter. Misuse of land and forests (96.9 GtCO2; 86%) (Evans, 2021)
5) AF is becoming the last 10ys a source of CO2 emissions (Qin et al., 2021)
3) The Amazon Forest (AF), crucial for Earth’s climate, is losing resilience (Bouton, et al., 2023)
THE LOCAL URGENCY
1) Amazon population = 4.3 million people (IBGE, 2024) 2) Among capitals, Manaus has highest population growth in Brazil. 2.28 M people (IBGE, 2022)

6) Main urban environmental problems: Polluted rivers (78%), Street garbage (61%), Poor urban trees (49%), Bad air (40%), Traffic jams (40%)
4) Waste of water, energy, and food
5) Low recycling

Establish the Amazon Earthshot Institute in the heart of Brazil’s urban Amazon region, with the mission to identify, support, and scale innovative solutions that protect and restore the Amazon while contributing to global efforts to repair and safeguard the planet.
