Update from the Headmaster

Dear Parents, This week our pupils have enjoyed an Enrichment Activities Week, trying new experiences and pushing themselves out of their comfort zone. A particular highlight saw our social media feeds come alive with content co-created by some Y9 pupils and our social media team – I hope you enjoyed this. CCF cadets enjoyed a successful week away on camp while here in the valley we have hosted tennis and cricket tournaments. Y7 and Y8 pupils endured a windy afternoon on the athletics track for their Sports Day. It was a real pleasure to congratulate prize winners and enjoy musical and theatrical performances whilst celebrating the successes of the year in the Junior House Prizegiving. At the end of this academic year I would like to express my thanks for all of your support for me and of the College and take this opportunity to wish all of our leaving staff and pupils all the best for the future. Good luck to all of those waiting for public examination results - we keep you all in our prayers. I wish everyone a lovely summer holiday and look forward to seeing our returning students in September. Best wishes, Jon

Enrichment Week - Junior House

Junior House rounded off the year with an exciting array of activities this week. They went on thrilling outdoor adventures with a trip to Go Ape!, caught some waves surfing at Saltburn (meeting Chris Kamara, a former English footballer, while there!) and explored the history and geography around Whitby. Back on solid ground, they took part in the very competitive Emiriti Cricket Festival before throwing themselves into more sports on Thursday at Junior House Sports Day. It was a great afternoon of sporting prowess and wonderful to see pupils cheering each other on during each event. Prizegiving yesterday rounded off a very busy week with live music performances from the students and speeches from the boarding house team. It was a fantastic week of exploration and active fun. Enjoy your long rest everyone!

Enrichment Week - Year 9

Year 9's enrichment week was designed to complement their recently chosen GCSE options. Their week included inspiring excursions to a local art exhibition and visits to York St John's University and York University. Back at school, they focussed their problem-solving skills with a treasure hunt and discovery walks. They also shadowed our support staff to see "A Day In the Life Of..." with the Food and Events, Security, Housekeeping and Laundry, IT and Social Media teams. The week continued with engaging talks on a diverse range of subjects including language, careers, the Holocaust, and even how to build a new business. They also got hands-on by making concrete planters, put on a theatrical performance, battled it out in a Maths challenge, and even invented a new sport! A great way to round off the year for Year 9.

Enrichment Week - Year 10

For Year 10, the focus of enrichment week was to build on the valuable themes explored in their tutorials throughout the year. The students engaged in a range of activities where they continued to develop the Benedictine values that we hold so closely. They delved into Climate Crisis awareness by participating in practical sessions focused on environmental care. They also dedicated time to develop their capability for personal well-being and further developing their resilience, gaining a deeper understanding of essential skills for both academic success and the world beyond the classroom. It was a week dedicated to growth and practical application.

Enrichment Week - Year 12

Year 12 students undertook a comprehensive programme designed to equip them with vital life skills and experiences which was structured around three key areas: Service, Skills and Health, and Wellbeing. Students dedicated their time to various service initiatives including working with young people with disabilities through the Friendship Project, hosting primary school children with a range of engaging classroom and outdoor activities, and contributing to their local community by cleaning and clearing for local churches and the Abbey. They even helped keep our beautiful coastline tidy with litter picking on Whitby beach. Practical skills development was a key component of their week. Students participated in a First Aid course, a Digital Marketing workshop, and short training sessions in sewing, car maintenance, and ironing. Important health and wellbeing topics were also addressed. Girls had the opportunity to learn about Understanding Your Natural Cycle, while boys participated in a session on Testicular Cancer awareness. It was an invaluable week, preparing our Year 12s for the next chapter of their lives with essential knowledge and practical experience.
