The European Scout Region is home to more than 2 million Scouts! Every three years, the Member Organizations of the European Scout Region decide on a Regional Scout Plan (our strategic priorities) and the elect members of the European Scout Committee (our board), who steers the Region's work to reach the aims set. To achieve it, volunteers from all around Europe are essential to contribute to and implement the Regional Scout Plan (our strategy) by supporting training, events, campfires, innovation, advocating, gathering best practises, spending some fun time together, and many more great things!

This explorer will help you learn more about the variety of volunteer roles available in the Region and hopefully steer you towards one! It will give you an impression on the differences between the positions, explain the expected profiles for each role and give a glance at what the volunteer experience might look like! The tool will not orient to specific roles in specific teams but rather provide information on the type of roles and give some practical examples from day-to-day volunteering experiences and type of tasks carried out.

The following roles are covered in the explorer:
  • Team (Task Force) Member
  • Team (Task Force) Lead
  • Coordinator

*Please note that the role of Consultant is not included in this overview. Consultants are volunteers holding experience and expertise in one or more of our Services. They follow a dedicated role training and are on-boarded in the overall WOSM Services framework. **In addition, many of the operational tasks and activities are shared and overlap with the work of the professionals at the World Scout Bureau - European Support Centre. This role is excluded from this explorer for obvious reasons. For more information on the Consultant and Staff roles you can reach out to the World Scout Bureau- European Support Centre directly. What does being a volunteer with the Region involve, and how can people get started?

Our volunteers, Team Purple, are the driving force behind the Region's mobilisation for implementing the Regional Scout Plan. Curious, innovative, devoted - those are just a few volunteer qualities one can come across. While many Scouts would feel fulfilled in a role of a regional volunteer and the Region thrives with a great mix of skills, competencies and experiences, there are several key must-haves to take into account. Hover your mouse over each of them to find out more...

Get to know the roles

There are a number of different roles where your experience, skills and energy is needed! Click to explore more about each role:

Team Member

APPOINTED

A member of a working group, short-term task force, or event planning team.

Team Lead

APPOINTED

A leader, coordinating the work of the team and ensuring well-being of team members.

Coordinator

APPOINTED

Ensures the fulfilment of tasks delivered by a number of teams in an Area of Operation.

The Team Member

A member of a team usually belongs to a group not larger than six Scouts (like a Scout patrol). As a member, you will deliver on agreed tasks individually or together with your fellow team members in a given timeframe. To do this, you will attend and actively participate in team meetings, both face-to-face and online. Being a member of such a team means you will get to know Scouts with whom you’d work closely for a period of time and build strong experiences together! All teams have specific objectives, tasks and projects to work on and often, specialise in a field such as sustainability, growth, external relations, youth programme or others. The usual outcomes of the teams in their support to Member Organisations are events, toolkits, guidelines, online sessions, e-learning and others. Some teams may have a shorter timeframe to achieve their goals; these teams are called task forces or project teams. Being a member of a task force may require more intense work on one specific project in a shorter period of time.

The Team Lead

Being a team lead means holding a position of leadership, which includes periodic coordination of the team (usually not bigger than 6 members) and/or a project. In addition to ensuring that tasks are performed within the scope and timeframe agreed, team leads foster team culture & dynamics. It’s a key leadership position in planning, executing and reviewing the team’s work. Team leads usually report to a Coordinator of a respective Area of Operation or directly to the European Scout Committee, as well as regular reporting to the Monitoring and Evaluation team. As an example, a team lead facilitates an inclusive process and, together with the team, specifies and agrees on actions that need to be taken to reach the aims set. The team lead prepares for and organises team meetings, supports fellow team members' individual journeys in their development as regional volunteers, is responsible for the team's results, and works closely with the Coordinator and staff from WSB Europe to direct the team's work towards success.

The Coordinator

The Coordinator (if appointed) is the main link between the different volunteer teams and the European Scout Committee. Usually, Coordinators, together with a dedicated staff member from WSB Europe, are responsible for a number of teams working in a specific area of operation. Ideally, the core part of the Coordinator’s responsibility includes close work with team leads, ensuring that teams are set and able to implement their piece of work. The role requires strong management and delegation skills, providing enough support to teams while staying on top of their work. The Coordinator is a member of a team made up of fellow Coordinators and, usually, a representative from the European Scout Committee and WSB Europe. It’s a fulfilling and challenging role. Coordinating a number of different teams includes a variety of tasks such as volunteer recruitment, reporting to the Committee, organising joint or area-level events, and overseeing relevant WOSM Services and other initiatives in the Region. In short, this role provides a number of opportunities to suggest more strategic ways to progress in the area and hands-on work contributing to the implementation of the Regional Scout Plan.
